S.T.A.R. Program: Student Tutoring and Remediation Program

The S.T.A.R. program is a free, middle school and high school tutoring program that focuses on remediation of standards not mastered in English: Reading and Writing and Math: Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, Algebra I, Geometry, AFDA, and Algebra II.

The tutoring and remediation sessions are sponsored by the Office of Student Management and Alternative Programs, are provided by a PWCS licensed teacher, and are free of charge to PWCS Middle and High Schools and PWCS students. The remediation sessions will be held using ZOOM and follow up materials will be available on the STAR Program Canvas page. ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE:

Beginning on 11/8, parents will receive an automated text message at 10:30am alerting them if their child was absent from the 1st class of the day. If you receive the absence text message and have no knowledge of your student not being in school, please call/contact your student immediately to ensure that they make it to school before 11:30am!

SOCIAL PROBATION:

At Potomac, we prioritize students positioning themselves for academic success by being present and on time to classes and by making decision inside and outside of the classroom that represent themselves, their families, and our Potomac community the right way. Our Student Handbook now includes the following: Any student who accumulates seven (7) discipline referrals will be placed on “Social Probation”, in addition to receiving the corresponding discipline consequence. Social Probation will prevent a student from attending one or more school functions such as Pep Rallies, Homecoming, and Prom.

Please reach out to your grade-level Assistant Principal with questions.

ACTIVITY BUSES:

To further promote our commitment to student success, late buses are available at 4:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students to receive extra assistance with teachers or to meet with school-sponsored clubs/organizations afterschool! Please encourage your student to check their teacher’s availability to utilize Tuesday or Thursday late buses for opportunities to deepen their learning beyond class time.

IMMUNIZATIONS:

The deadline for rising Seniors to meet the immunization requirement for mandatory immunizations for public school enrollment is August 17, 2023. If proof of the required immunizations is not provided by August 17, 2023, the student will be excluded from school starting August 21, 2023, until the required immunization documentation has been provided to the school. Attached HERE is the Vaccine Information Statement for the Meningitis ACWY vaccine. If you have questions, please contact our school nurse or visit the PWCS Immunization Requirements webpage.

STUDENTVUE:

This app is where students access bus and class schedules, grades, attendance information. StudentVUE accounts are already created for students. Students (new to the school district) will receive login instructions during their first week of school.

There are two ways to access StudentVUE:
1. Go to Google Chrome and enter this link: studentvue.pwcs.edu

2. Download the StudentVUE app by searching "StudentVUE" in the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores.

The mobile app will ask for a district address. It is: https://va-pwcps-psv.edupoint.com/

Log in with your [email protected] (your county email address and your password) and click Login.

If you can log into other county applications, but cannot log into StudentVUE, please verify that you are logging in with your whole email address. For example if your username is JamesAF22, you will log into StudentVUE with [email protected].

If you have forgotten your county/network password, go to Password Self Serve to reset it. Please note that you can't reset just your StudentVUE password. You must reset your network password. The new password that you save will become the password that gets you into your school issued laptop, Office365, Canvas, and StudentVUE.

If you are unable to reset your password from home, it may be because your password has expired. When you arrive to school (on the first day of school), you should be able to successfully reset it.

If you are trying to access your schedule, an option would be to have your parent or guardian log into their ParentVUE account.

Parents who have activated their ParentVue account will be able to view the schedule in their app.

Log into the ParentVue app, Select your student, and Select Class Schedule

If your parent/guardian has not activated their ParentVUE account, on the 1st day of each new school year, 1st-period teacher rosters will be posted on the walls to help you locate your classroom.

PARENTVUE:

Throughout each school year, parents will be asked to log-in to ParentVUE to stay current on school information including class schedules, attendance, grades, and emergency card information.

If you need assistance with accessing or activating your ParentVUE account, please contact your child's grade level secretary. Please indicate your full name, your child’s full name, and your telephone number.

9th grade: Mrs. McKenzie - [email protected]

10th grade: Ms. Katelynn Manetta - [email protected]

11th grade: Mrs. Vela - [email protected]

12th grade: Mrs. Covington - [email protected]

BUS UPDATE:

Bus schedules will available in ParentVUE at the beginning of each school year. At that time, you will also be able to download the Here Comes the Bus mobile app that allows you to track your student’s buses in real-time.

LAPTOP DISTRIBUTION:

Every Potomac student will have the opportunity to check-out a laptop at the beginning of the school year. It is expected that students have their laptop with them each day and students/families will be held responsible for inappropriate use and will be held responsible for any damage.

LAPTOP INSURANCE:

When laptops are distributed (at the beginning of each school year), we highly encourage each family to take advantage of the optional insurance being offered through a partnership with Securranty and Prince William County Public Schools. Families will be responsible for any damage, including accidental damage, that occurs to student laptops this year and this insurance coverage can help provide peace of mind. Please visit the Securranty website by clicking HERE for more information about this insurance policy and to purchase the insurance directly.
