Battlefield and Gar-Field High School students earn high honors at DECA State Leadership Conference

Students from Battlefield and Gar-Field High Schools at DECA State Leadership Conference

Marketing students from Battlefield and Gar-Field High Schools represented their schools and PWCS at the recent state conference of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). The conference, held in Virginia Beach, attracted thousands of students from across Virginia to compete in various marketing, economics and business categories. Based on performance, 19 students qualified to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Orlando this April.

The Battlefield High state finalists and their categories of expertise are:

  • Entrepreneurship Promotion Project – Gillian Beville (10), Aleena Shah (10), Neda Tebyanian (10) – 8th Place
  • Finance Operations Research - Kelsey Bruggeworth (12), Carter Gallant (12), JT McGuire (12) – 3rd Place
  • Financial Literacy Promotion Project - Kiernan Field (11), Davin Flores (11), Josh Merichetti (11) – 7th Place
  • Franchise Business Plan - Avery Poland (12), Jenna Shelton (12), Lukas Watts (11) – 2nd Place
  • Public Relations Project - Brooke Burkhart (10), Ella Butcher (10), Mary Kate Colvin (10) – 4th Place
  • Start-Up Business Plan - Esperanza Almeda (12), Emma Linderman (12) – 4th Place

“The leadership skills these students have learned through participation in DECA are invaluable,” said Jennifer Smith, Battlefield High marketing teacher. “They leave the conference confident in their presentation skills and with an understanding of real-life business situations.”

Esperanza Almeda, Andrew Barton, Gillian Beville, Brianna Borders, Brooklyn Borders, Trevor Bounds, Bennett Brower, Troy Brown, Kelsey Bruggeworth, Brooke Burkhart, Ella Butcher, Egan Calhoun, Kyle Canestra, Raheem Clemon, Mary Kathleen Colvin, Ian Dinga, Kiernan Field, Davin Flores, Carleigh Frilles, Carter Gallant, Manav Gangele, Sydney Ginn, Ashley Hansen, Hunter Key, Jonathan Kuglistsch, Jett Landrum, Emma Linderman, James Thomas McGuire, Josh Merichetti, Morgan Murphy, Riley Nguyen, Avery Poland, McKenna Powers, Cash Rafferty, Kyle Rowland, Emily Schmall, Aleena Shah, Jenna Shelton, Neda Tebyanian, Lukas Watts, and Mackenzie Wolfe.

A contingent of 13 Gar-Field High students also attended the state conference. Seniors Christina Veha and Wendy Zhou achieved Gold Recertification for Gar-Field’s School Based Enterprise. They are eligible to compete at the International Conference in Orlando in April.

Dixia Garcia received a medal for her score on a test in the Hospitality and Tourism Event, while Wendy Alvarez and Kayle Gonzalez were recognized for being District Co-Presidents.

DECA’s stated mission is to "prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe."
