Course Name: Principals of Engineering (PLTW)    1 Credit

Principles of Engineering (POE) is a foundation course of the high school

engineering pathway. This survey course exposes students to some of the

major concepts that they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering

course of study. Through problems that engage and challenge, students

explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the

strength of materials and structures, automation, and kinematics. The

course applies and concurrently develops secondary level knowledge and

skills in mathematics, science, and technology.

 

Students have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of

course concepts through activity-, project-, and problem-based (APB)

learning. By solving rigorous and relevant design problems using engineering

and science concepts within a collaborative learning environment, APB

learning challenges students to continually hone their interpersonal skills,

creative abilities, and problem solving skills. Students will also learn how to

document their work and communicate their solutions to their peers and

members of the professional community. It also allows students to develop

strategies to enable and direct their own learning, which is the ultimate goal

of education.

Materials:

 Composition book with Graph paper, Ruler, Pencil, USB DRIVE (8GB) , Colored pencils, Ruler with metric scale.

 

Specific Course Activities

All students will be expected to:

● Maintain an engineering notebook based on the Project Lead the

Way standards.

● Complete assignments in their notebooks and using our Autodesk

Inventor software.

● Maintain a course long portfolio showcasing assignments from each

unit.

● Work alongside classmates to complete a variety of design

challenges.

 

 

Course Outline

 

Unit 1: Fundamentals of Analog and Digital Electronics

● Unit 2: Combinational Logic

● Unit 3: Sequential Logic

● Unit 4: Microcontrollers

 

Attendance, Tardiness:

Students are expected to attend class in accordance with the Public School Laws of Virginia.  Students are expected to be in class and prepared to learn when the class starts.  Tardiness to class of more than 20 minutes will be treated as an absence.  Students that are absent from class greater than 5% of the time, may not receive credit for the class.

 

Class participation:

Participation in class discussion and lab activities are a required part of this class. Any class work not completed during class is considered homework.

 

Cellphone/Tablets  Use

 

Cellphones & Tablets are permitted in the classroom BUT ONLY FOR ACADMEIC AND RESEARCH PURPOSES!!!  We will be using the cellphone in this course to take pictures of work and to scan document with the app Cam Scan (free download).

 

Any student caught using their cellphone during instruction time or documentation purpose their will have their phone taken away, TURNED OFF and given back at the end of class for their 1st offense. For a 2nd offense the phone will be turned off and turn into the office.

 

 

 

Missed exams or assignments:

Students may make-up exams or assignments and receive a recorded grade when an excused absence(s) is documented by a note from the parent. 

 

Assignments not turned in on the assigned date will be consider late and will be mark down a letter grade for each day late. Student will only be given a 2 days after the due to turn in work. If no work is turn in then the grade will result in a zero in the grade book. Work in to be completed at 11:59 on Fridays

 

The overall grade will be based upon the following areas:

● Engineering Notebook Assignments and Portfolio

● Tests and Quizzes

● In Class Assignments and Participation

 

Lab Fee:

There is a $10.00 lab fee for every student. ALL STUDENT MUST PAY THE FEE BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. 

 

           

 

Lab safety/health:

It is the responsibility of the students to follow the training of safe practices in the Technology Lab.  The safety program consists of more than lecturing and posting safety rules and regulations.  It includes instruction that actively involves the students in learning and choosing behaviors that promote the safe use of equipment that is used in the Technology Lab.  The implementation and promotion of safe practices in the Technology Lab to prevent incidents and injuries to students are the responsibility of everyone.

Computer Misconduct

Computer misconduct includes any activity that is not on-task.  Students should not be completing work for other classes, playing games, or on the Internet without permission:

 

1st Offense:  Parent Phone Call/Warning of future consequences

2nd Offense: Parent Phone Call/Logged Off for the Day.

3rd Offense:  Parent Phone Call/Logged Off for a Week

4th Offense:  Parent Phone Call/Logged Off for a Month

5th Offense:  Referred to Administration

 

(For a 3rd and 4th offense, All work will be completed by hand drawings)

 

Grading:

The grading system for this class consists of letter grades based on an average for the assignment.

A    (90-100%) - Outstanding level of achievement

B + (87-89%) – Very High level of achievement

B    (80-86%) - High level of achievement

C+  (77-79%) – Above Average level of achievement

C    (70-76%) - Satisfactory level of achievement

D   (60-66%) - Low level of achievement

E   (59% or lower) Failure

 

Percent scores are rounded to the nearest whole number.  Therefore, any score below .5 rounds down and any score ending in .5 and above rounds up.  (Example 1: 89.49% rounds to 89; Example 2: 89.50% rounds to 90)

Evaluation

 

No student may work in the laboratory (POWER TOOLS OR HAND TOOLS) without an instructor present in the room.

 

All labs must be monitored at all times, with supervision present, using proper learned safety techniques during a safety orientation.
